As the parable of the prodigal son teaches, there is a waiting Father even for those that only learn from desperation.

Agreed on both accounts.

It's interesting to think about desperate changes vs. inspired changes. Seems like a wasted opportunity to ignore inspiration only to wait for desperation to spur us on.

Such is the life of survivors, not thrivers.

When I use to speak to people on Sunday mornings about their "change needs" the saying went like this; I am here to comfort the afflicted and to afflict the comfortable.

In some ways that is still the case. People change for two reasons – inspiration (comfort) or desperation (affliction). The truth is that most of the time it is desperation that nudges folks along.

Good posting – change is the norm. Lots to think about, thanks Dustin.

One other location of friction is on the border between outside and inside. As the business developer for our company, I see what the industry needs (outside) and work for what changes we must make to be around in the future based on those needs (inside). I think the salesman/biz dev. must be able to bring the outside friction inside so that the change can be, as you term it, authentic change.

Great post!
