I have no idea what that is (Gee Note: It’s kind of hypnotic though right? I’ve watched this thing like sixteen times in a row now. It’s not that I like it. It’s that I can’t not watch it).

Paul,
I think we all have unique contributions to the world around us. I know you do, and I appreciate the wisdom and humor you bring from your unique perspective.

David,
Thanks for adding to the conversation. I agree that this is challenging. Just to be clear, I'm not advocating that we create proprietary services that cannot be used without our involvement. But, I think today's collaborative environment actually creates more demand for "role players" in the workplace. These roles shouldn't be generic, though. Each of us should be asking what we contribute which brings the most value. Are we pushing ourselves to deliver that value consistently? Does our current team value that contribution? How do we get to the place where we consistently deliver value that our team needs?

I believe these are good, but possibly dangerous, questions for us to consider.

Dustin,

This post highlights one of those organizational dilemmas. On the one hand, people need to "stitch themselves into the work" as you suggest, yet on the other hand as things move towards more collaborative activities there needs to be opportunities for everybody to do this stitching. It ends up being quite difficult to identify individual contributions when the result is a 15+ people team effort.
