Artists see the world through their art.
Back when I was in art school I walked past a tree and began imagining how I would draw the contrasting light and shadow on it’s bark, its maze of branches, and its colorful foliage. As you create art as a way to make sense of the world, you begin to translate it instinctively. Much like people who discover themselves dreaming in a new language they learned.
A theory exists that we only experience the world through filters. Our eyes send messages to our brain, which interprets these signals as reality. But it’s not really reality, it’s an interpretation of reality. Art gives us a chance to interpret reality, and then share that interpretation with the world. This is why a striking painting, a heartfelt poem, a powerful song, or an immersive novel can touch us and change how we see the world.
Create your art. Look “through” it. Then invite others to take in the view as well.
